Peacemaking Conference:

Nurturing Peace in Contexts of Global Violence

Religious leaders throughout the world in every faith tradition are challenged today to be active agents of peace. New York Theological Seminary has created a four-day conference that will bring together theological educators and others to work together to teach and learn about peacemaking both globally and locally. The event is scheduled for May 22-25, 2013 at the Interfaith Center, New York City. Hartford Seminary has joined other theological schools, universities and faith-based grass roots organizations in sponsoring the conference.

Hartford Seminary is making significant contributions to the Peacemaking Conference. The Seminary will be represented by four students who are presenting papers at the conference: International Peacemaking Program students Hans Harmakaputra, Ezekiel Babagario and Zulu Lemtur as well as Matthew Rideout. The Rev. Dr. Jonathan Lee, an alumnus and Director of Institutional Advancement, will also be making a presentation on the International Peacemaking Program at Hartford Seminary.

The Peacemaking Conference, with key sponsorship from the Henry Luce Foundation, will open with a tour of various programs and sites throughout the New York Region that are dedicated to peacemaking. Following these events, the plenary address will be given at Riverside Church by Dr. Sakena Yacoobi, Founder, Afghan Institute of Learning.

The conference continues with tracks and workshops focused on Peacemaking and topics including

á Violence against women and children

á Violence against marginalized communities

á State sanctioned violence

á Religions of the world

á The economy and ecology.
