Hartford Seminary is pleased to announce that the graduation speaker for 2016 will be Dr. Michael Gilligan, president of the Henry Luce Foundation.
Dr. Gilligan has served as President of the Henry Luce Foundation since January 2003. From 1998 to 2003, he directed the Luce Foundation’s Theology Program. Before coming to the Foundation, Dr. Gilligan served as Director of Accreditation and Leadership Education for the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.
Earlier, he was Academic Dean and Professor of English at Pontifical College Josephinum, a Roman Catholic seminary in Columbus, Ohio; and for ten years worked in the schools of the Catholic Diocese of Columbus, as a teacher, academic dean, principal, and assistant superintendent.
Dr. Gilligan received the B.A. from Duke University, and M.A. and Ph.D. in English from the University of Virginia. Today Dr. Gilligan serves on the board of the Council of Independent Colleges and recently completed 12 years as a trustee of the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church. He chairs the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, and the Ampersand Institute of Emory & Henry College.
Graduation is scheduled for Friday, May 13, at 4 p.m. It will be held, rain or shine, under a tent on the front lawn of Hartford Seminary, 77 Sherman St., Hartford.
