The Rev. Dr. Donna Schaper, who teaches in Hartford Seminary’s Doctor of Ministry program, was one of the main speakers at an event in Hamden on Sunday, Feb. 19, attended by more than 300 faith and civic leaders.

The event was held at Congregation Mishkan Israel and organized by Rabbi Herbert Brockman, a former Hartford Seminary trustee.

The Rev. Schaper, senior minister at Judson Memorial Church in New York City, has been outspoken about what is called the “New Sanctuary Movement.”

“Religious congregations cannot not be sanctuaries,” the Rev. Schaper said, according to an article in the New Haven Register.
