A series of articles in the Minneapolis Star Tribune looking at the future of organized religion in America concludes that “as society is becoming more fragmented, so will expressions of faith.”

Professor Scott Thumma, who has examined religious trends for decades as Director of the Hartford Institute for Religion Research, summed it up this way: “There will still be people who like the ancient worship, the bells and smells and organ music. But it’s a smaller group.”

“The model that fits with modern society are malls and boutiques,” he said. “There will be very large churches and smaller niche churches. Dinner church. Bluegrass church. Pop-up church. We’ll have a greater variety of styles.”
