A Hartford Seminary Message about COVID-19

Dear HartSem Community,

As you likely know, health officials have warned that the COVID-19 (coronavirus) will spread in the United States. Please know that we are taking steps to prepare for any potential cases and that we are monitoring the situation – both domestically and internationally – with great care.

There are basic steps all of us can follow to minimize risk to our HartSem community, and the larger communities with which we connect. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides precautionary advice, including:

  • Wash your hands frequently, using soap and water or an alcohol-based rub.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Keep a distance of a few feet between yourself and others, particular those who are coughing, sneezing, or evidently ill.
  • Cover your mouth when sneezing or coughing; discard tissues immediately in closed bins.
  • Stay home if you feel sick and seek attention from a medical provider if your symptoms warrant it.
  • Wash your hands before, during, and after preparing food.

We are paying extra attention to disinfection and cleaning procedures at the Seminary, and we ask that you do the same in your work area or residence. HartSem faculty are considering alternative means of teaching classes, should the need arise. All of us should pay attention to our overall health and wellness at this time.

If you are planning to travel internationally (students, staff, and faculty), please consider registering with the U.S. Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. STEP will alert you about any new health or safety issues in the countries you plan to visit. We also ask that you follow reputable news sources about any other travel restrictions or closures.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Take care,

Ann Crawford
