Professor Scott Thumma was asked to address the question of how megachurches might function during a potential public health crisis after Life.Church pastor Bobby Groeschel was quarantined following potential exposure to the coronavirus.

Pastor Groeschel had been in Germany at a leadership summit when he came into contact with a speaker who later developed COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus. On his way back to Oklahoma in later February, he was told he should be quarantined for 14 days. He has not had any symptoms.

Professor Thumma told Christianity Today that the absence of a pastor isn’t likely to affect a megachurch, which can used video services and group networks to avoid large gatherings.

“They could worship online for a month and not miss a beat,” he said.
