On-Campus Employment
Volunteer Work
Off-Campus Employment
Curricular Practical Training (Islamic Chaplaincy Program Students Only)
Employment is limited to on-campus work and for 20 hours a week while classes are in session . Students are eligible to work 40 hours (during the January Intersession if you are not registered for courses) and the summer session if you will register for the fall semester.
You are permitted to volunteer 20 hours or more per week on or off campus without approval.
Please make certain that this is strictly volunteer work and that you are not receiving payment. Receiving payment without prior authorization and an employment card is in direct violation of F-1 Visa regulations and you will fall out of status. Please see the CISSS before you begin any volunteer work and submit documentation of the volunteer position for approval.
Pre-Completion Occupational Practical Training (Pre-Completion OPT)
This is employment approval prior to completing your program of study. You must receive prior authorization from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and an employment card. To be eligible, you must have been lawfully enrolled on a full-time basis at Hartford Seminary for one full academic year. Please plan to apply for employment authorization three months prior to the date you wish to begin employment.
Employment must be directly related to your degree. We recommend that you keep documentation that your Pre-Completion OPT employment is directly related to your degree. Documentation should also be given to the CISSS. The documentation should include: position held, proof of duration of that position, job title held, supervisor or manager contact information, and description of job. You may request authorization to work part-time (20 hours per week or less) during the fall and spring semesters. Also, you may request authorization to work full-time during official school breaks only (January Intersession if you are not taking courses and the summer session if you will register for the fall semester).
