Pass/Fail Grading Option for the Spring 2021 Semester

Given the extraordinary set of circumstances due to the COVID-19 disease outbreak, and after careful consideration, the Seminary’s faculty has voted to allow students to convert from standard letter grading (A-C, F) to Pass/Fail, upon request, for spring 2021 courses.

We recognize that the needs and goals of our student community are diverse, and we wanted to provide you with the flexibility to choose the best option for yourself during this unprecedented semester of upheaval.

Effective immediately students may elect to switch some or all of their spring 2021 courses to Pass/Fail grading. The deadline to switch spring 2021 courses to Pass/Fail grading is the final day that assignments are due as per the course syllabus, or May 6, 2021, whichever is earlier.

  • There is no limit on the number of fall 2020 courses allowed to be taken on a Pass/Fail basis.
  • Courses earning a “Pass” grade will satisfy program requirements.
  • Students earning the equivalent of a “C” or better will be awarded a grade of “Pass” The “Pass” carries no grade points and is NOT computed into a student’s semester or cumulative grade point averages (GPAs.)
  • A grade of “Fail” or “F” is recorded normally and computed into a student’s GPA.
  • The decision to switch to Pass/Fail is irreversible.

Students may request Pass/Fail grading by completing the Pass/Fail Grading Opt In  form on the website.

Important Note about Pass/Fail Grades

It is the sole responsibility of the student to ensure that courses converted from standard letter grading to Pass/Fail are still eligible for transfer to another school. Many schools require a minimum letter grade in order for a course to be considered for transfer. “Pass” grades earned under this policy will be considered to have earned a grade of “C” or better.

If you have any questions about the decision to convert from standard letter grading to Pass/Fail, and how it may impact your academic goals,  or your financial aid, please do not hesitate to contact the Registrar’s Office
